There are hundreds of books on prayer, and much of the advice they contain is likely to be the same. So what distinguishes these books? Richard J. Foster wrote Prayer in 1992. It is a remarkable book in that it takes one through all of the various disciplines of prayer in a very practical manner, giving suggestions for each type of prayer along with an explanation of how to say the prayer. Until I came across this book I found it difficult to pray in a manner that felt right for me. The book is probably fine for those interested in a mainstream approach to prayer. I hoped for a more liberal, open-minded approach. I liked the table of contents categories, but the strict Trinitarian approach was not what I was hoping for.

I borrowed this book from a library to read because I had been really impressed with one of Foster's other books, Celebration of Discipline. I had also joined the prayer chain at our church, and I wanted my prayer life to be more consistent. I was so amazed at the knowledge, detail, awareness, and holiness in this book that I immediately bought my own copy. I wanted to take notes; I wanted to be able to go back and reread chapters. This is an excellent book. It explains many different prayer styles. This is a great referrence book. Everyone will be able to enhance their relationship with GOD by using the methods in this book.

I've owned this book for a while and loved it so much I ordered copies for my mom and my best friend. Very helpful approach to the subject of prayer, which is often a daunting topic.
