Editorial Review:

Product Description:
“Barr turns history into a drama, with bright writing and a fascinating cast of characters.” —Mary Foster, Associated Press T. E. Lawrence’s classic Seven Pillars of Wisdom made the Arab revolt a legend and helped turn him into the mythical “Lawrence of Arabia.” Setting the Desert on Fire is both a masterly account of the intrigue behind the revolt and its startling consequences for the present-day Middle East and a portrait of Lawrence that brings fresh insight to the true nature of the master mythmaker.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Interesting....
This is an interesting account of TELawrence in the desert with more information then I really needed to know but all in all well worth the read. Good geograhphy of the Saudi desert and mountains. The accounts of TEL gives a different view of a difficult man who had many issues with himself and others.
Definitely recommended for those who want details and an expert account of TEL.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - For any general lending library or history collection strong in Middle East history
SETTING THE DESERT ON FIRE: T.E. LAWRENCE AND BRITAIN'S SECRET WAR IN ARABIA, 1916-1918 is for any general lending library or history collection strong in Middle East history. It tells of T.E. Lawrence (a.k.a. "Lawrence of Arabia") and how he played a key role in British efforts to set off an Arab revolt.

It is a complicated book with lots of names...I bought it for a senior class about the war from 1916-18. I skim through it..and have loaned it to a friend. Some in class love it..and some are not sure...but it fits the bill for the class!...Thank you. Clarice Wilber

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - 5 star for military buffs; not an adventure novel
Thick with excerpts of deeply researched correspondence, memoirs, and government documents the author closely examines the strategy, tactics and the shifting political sands of the times as great political powers look beyond the end of World War I, even when the outcome is in doubt. This book details the conflict between the desire of the French to control parts of Arabia after the war, the British desire to maintain control of Egypt and the Suez canal, the British internal conflict as to were to ... Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great read
A well written history of the Arab revolt that illuminates some of the background maneuvering of the British involvement in the Middle East. It gives you a better understanding of the roots of the problems western governments are now having earning the trust of the Arab peoples.
