Although the quality of Rule's writing varies in my opinion (sometimes wildly), this study of a narcissistic, psychopathic mom who shot her three children and tried to blame it on a random stranger in an attempt to woo back a lost boyfriend (who fortunately realizes at that point that he's been sleeping with the devil and runs for the hills) is one of her best books. There are a lot of interesting details of the murderer's life to explore, including her acting as a surrogate mom and her ability ... Read More

My step monster which shot my father and aunt is in prison with this horrible lady! She just is and idiot for thinking she would get away with this. Awesome story, just wish it werent true. Wish we there was a book just on the kids and how they has to cope thru life.

This book is probably Ann Rule's best.
The ghastly Diane Downs, an advertisement for sterilization, has children to fulfil her neurotic needs. When they turn out to have needs of their own that conflict with her love life, she shoots them.Fortunately, two of the children survive & are rescued from her skewed version of "care."
The story has been extremely well researched, with the author searching out every small fact to try to make sense of the truly senseless. The long ... Read More

I am a true crime fan and missed this somehow year's ago. The effort she put into researching this book and her ability to transport me to visualize through her writing always amazes me. I wish she could write forever. I think people who read true crime realize more than the average person that you can never never ever really know someone.

Well written, turned into a great TV movie. Anne Rule is the best true crime writer. Diane Downs is a sick, self serving person. Highly recommend this book to any true crime reader.
