Editorial Review:

Product Description:
It's America in 1962--where slavery is legal and the few surviving Jews hide anxiously under assumed names; all because twenty years earlier America lost a war and is now occupied jointly by Nazi Germany and Japan.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - The Ending SUCKED
This book is strong on character development but weak on alternate history. Please note, the ending was horrible. With the Nazis on the cusp of a nuclear attack on their unsuspecting Japanese ally, Mr. Dick chose to leave us hanging. I acknowledge this novel/alternate history story was written in 1962, a period in which authors attempted to "wow" their readers with sophisticated, nuvo, hanging endings but give me a break. I can envision bohemian hipsters with black cigarette holders dangling ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Conflicted
My mission is to read every Hugo and Nebula nominee and winner that has been converted to Kindle format, which led me to this book.

This is a very well written story, and I very much like Dick's style and manner of writing. But I am bored by alternate histories; the stuff simply puts me to sleep.

So great writing, and if you like alternate histories you should read this. For myself, it was all I could do to persevere and finish it.

Only additional comment ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very Good Overall, But ...
This is a book by PKD. It is regarded as one of his best.

Overall, I like the book very much, but I think I'll put it this way and say that the very last part of the book and the ending were not the best parts. I like it better when a book has a satisfying ending of some sort - here things were left unresolved.

The plot in basically this. The Allies lose WWII and the Germans and Japanese (except for a little part to Italy and some buffer zones) split the world more or less. ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Worlds Within Worlds Within Worlds...
I can think of several other Philip K. Dick books that should have won prestigious prizes like the Hugo award, but if there could only be one, "The Man in the High Castle" is a good choice. The Hugo is a fan award, and this novel's alternate-history setting makes it a definite crowd-pleaser, but such a gimmick by itself would not have been enough to earn praise. Instead of explaining how the Axis won World War II (boring), this author simply took the difference for granted, and asked himself how people ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Whi Is John Gault (The Man.......)
Interesting speculation, but essentially pointless.

The ending is obscure and unsatisfactory. It is as if the writer decided that he wanted to finish the book and go have a drink
