I teach 7th and 8th grade students. This series has engaged several reluctant readers. They quickly read the book to move on to the next in the series. One student discussed the book and the interest spread from there. I recommend this series.

I read this series with my nephews, at their urging. They read them themselves but they love to be read to. I find these books to be well written and in fact rather fascinating. I have not read one of the books in this series that I did not like and have not found one of these books that the nephews did not like. Children need to read. If your child has problems finding books he/she likes and then staying with them, these books will deliver! Everything is just right from the font size to the cliffhanger chapter endings. Your young reader will stay focused and will finish these books.

My son loves these books. He is in 4th grade and is using them as his independent reader for class.

This series is a gem among a bunch of formulaic pablum currently on the market. Even the venerable Nancy Drew series was formulaic pablum compared to Haddix's work.
My only complaints are directed toward the publisher/editor, not the author. The "sample" chapter of the third book in the second book is a spoiler! Do not read it, if you don't want to know all through the next book how things turn out. What were they THINKING?!
