Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - hard of hearing
This movie moved me to turn it off after an excruciatingly boring 20 minutes -- a complete waste of time and money.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great movie - faithful to awsome Hemingway novel
I've been on a quest to watch movies based on Hemingway books and see how well they compare to the words of the master. Chances are I will end up disappointed, I know. I confess I was afraid that this movie would be too watered down, in order to comply with commercial and censorship requirements of the 1940s, but I have to say the movie is an outstanding adaptation of a great novel.

The movie is long so you might want to use the "intermission" and leave the second half for another day. ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Another underrated classic
I think the reason why this 1943 film isn't really fully appreciated by the public of today is because this isn't the typical action-packed Hollywood film. It's a character-driven story with loads of dialogue and few action, and that's why it's so good. Plus, it has Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergmann; the chemistry between them seems so real in this film. And of course, there's Katina Paxinou as Pilar. She's spectacular, and she deserved the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The ending isn't much of a ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Bad Hemingway Karaoke
I love the passion in this film! Always! Made in the year o' my birth.('43) (Still) This film kills Fascists! Now more than ever, despite its and our, scaredy cat, watered down versions. Great character actors--Akim Tamiroff and his "people" insurgent guerrilla band; Mother Courage, force of Nature, "Pilar", Katina Paxinou, who won the Academy Award for this. And of course, Bergman and Cooper, May and December, blue eyes, Rushing mountain stream, snowbound Love in Bomber Jacket. "I'll hold the legs of ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - "Any Man's death diminishes me"
"Because I am involved in mankind;
and therefore send to know
for who the bell tolls.
It tolls for thee."

Spain 1937. Robert Jordan (Gary Cooper) came to Spain o fight for "The Republic" (a nice way to say for the commies) and against nationalists. He also had a dislike for Germans and Italians. His assignment was to go behind the nationalist lines and blow up a bridge at a strategic moment. There this stoic hero meets a peasant girl (a much too young for Gary, Ingrid ... Read More
