Editorial Review:

Product Description:
There are approximately seven million horses in America. Each year, over seventy thousand are abused, abandoned, and fated to slaughter by callous and irresponsible owners. With a heart as big as a pasture, author Melanie Bowles takes some of these horses into her sanctuary called Proud Spirit. Here, horses that arrive listless and broken find a home where they finally know safety.

The bond between horse and caretaker does not happen overnight. It hangs by a fine thread of trust that the author earns with endless patience and a full commitment to the well-being of the horses in her care. The horses, some of which have suffered severe abuse, astound her time and again with their ability to trust, return the love they are given, and enjoy the companionship of other horses.

You will meet a whole stableful of remarkable horses:

Dusty, a Thoroughbred who recovered from severe injuries to reveal a rambunctious personality and a knack for stealing hats;

Maddy, an old mare, and Dancer, a gallant Appaloosa, both of whom had been isolated for years but whose ecstatic first acquaintance at Proud Spirit was, mysteriously, like the reunion of two soul mates;

Annie, a little sorrel mare who will break your heart with her weary kindness and who found peace and compassion, at last, under an old oak tree in a pasture at Proud Spirit;

Wrangler, a Miniature whose premature separation from his dam turned him into a tiny tormentor. His rowdy innocence helped Marshal, a huge Palomino gelding with neurological trauma, become playful and engaged as he educated Wrangler in horsy manners. Horses of Proud Spirit is an homage to the spirit of these alluring creatures and a moving memoir of lessons learned in compassion, strength, and loss.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Tugs at your heart
Wow. This book is one of those you just don't want to put down yet I have trouble keeping awake when I read(which is right before I turn out the light)so the fact there are short stories about all the different horses makes it a true plus for me. This book just captures your emotions. Melanie Bowles is a true horse person and has a heart that just never ends. This book is a must read for anyone that has compassion for animals.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A treasure
This is an amazing book. I am a bit biased because I love horses, not in the biblical sense, purely in a platonic and socially acceptable way. I grew up riding horses, not in the catherine the great sort of way, you know, the regular way most people ride horses. I have had such amazing experiences being with these beasts, not bad beasts, you know, beasts as in animals of enormous magnitude and grandeur. For many years I saw the neglect of horses when I worked at Farm Team, a non profit that rehabilitates ... Read More

Melanie Bowles lives her stories . . . She and her husband Jim found that their love for horses didn't just stop at owning a horse or two. They quickly learned that a great need existed in the real world. Melanie and Jim began taking in old, abused and neglected horses (and a couple donkeys), many of which were on their last legs. They nurtured the broken down animals, feeding their bodies and spirits. The touching accounts of their many amazing successes and the difficult times when it was too late for ... Read More

I absolutely loved this book. I went through a lot of Kleenex. The book is very well-written. It is a quick read if you want, but it really makes you stop and think, laugh, cry. It's amazing that people who have no knowledge of horses get them and then don't know what to do with them. Melanie cries right along with the reader. I'm glad that she has rescued these proud animals and given their lives back to them. I liked the pictures she had in the book, and I'm trying to get the DVD of the horse operation ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - good rescue book
Excellent and inspiring. The author sometimes focuses a bit too much on the hardships faced by the animals instead of the recovery processes and maturing into the horse they are today, but makes up for it with other chapters regarding just 'the happy stuff'. Definitely worth owning, as well as the second book!
