For all the glorious noise that unfolds within the grooves of the new Deftones disc White Pony - layered arrangements, rib-rattling rhythms, dark, sensuous melodies - the band fails to connect with a solid hook. It`s unfortunate, but truth be told, Deftones are a band that have always gotten by on the strength of their sonic intentions rather than their ability to write catchy choruses. So why do we put up with them? Well, considering that the post-Limp Bizkit hard rock community has come down with a severe case of metallic-flavored hip-hop fever, Deftones deserve credit for at least trying something different. Let`s face it, bringing grace and sophistication to the savage land of heavy metal is a thankless task, but that hasn`t stopped these guys.
