Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great western
Great characters, interesting plot, realistic depiction of the grueling journey on the Oregon Trail, and a happy ending!

I especially liked that Luke was strong and capable, smarter than most men, but not
able to win physical fights with men. Jae gets two thumbs up for making Luke
feminine enough to turn the other cheek and walk away from confrontations that
she knew she couldn't win. Too many lesfics have kick-ass, infallible, unbeatable
and unrealistic heroines. ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - An expensive romantic fiction
Jae writes with a gentleness that has been missing in gay women's fiction. Unfortunately, this story has too much "Ladies of the Evening" telling that keeps it from being totally enjoyable. Perhaps if the author would have eliminated the first 32 pages or so, and incorporated the important facts (per se) into the rest of the story, the adventurous historical aspect would have remained center stage. There is competition between life on the Oregon Trail and life in a brothel (or life as a lady of the evening), ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Romance set in realistic history
"Luke" Hamilton has lived her life as a man since she was twelve and has had no problem concealing her gender even as an officer in the US Army. Now Luke wants to head for the Oregon Territory and start a ranch for breeding horses. Before the wagon train departs from Independence, Missouri she meets Nora Macauley who is supporting herself and her young daughter as a prostitute and something about the woman impresses her. Though Luke had never considered the possibility of a family for herself she wants to help ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great story
I really loved this book. You can just feel and imagine what it was like on the Oregon trail. Very well written.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - So-So Writing, Good Story
I felt that Jae's writing in Backwards to Oregon was very average in quality. There wasn't anything very compelling in how she writes and especially in the second half of the book was much too repetitive for my tastes. I get really irritated when the same thoughts are expressed by characters or the same explanations are given over and over again. However, given that she is evidently German I think that even being an average writer in English is an impressive accomplishment.

Jae is a good story teller ... Read More
