Purchased for my grandson, as he is very interested in learing the Japanese language and customs. He is enjoying this book.

If you have some Japanese vocabulary, basic knowledge of Japanese sentence structure and have learned Kana, this book will work. I wouldn't recommend it for an absolute beginner, however. It is effective and engaging. But you must be very self-motivated as well. I bought and got through this last year and feel that I really made progress.

This book is great for learning to read and write Kanji. I tried Kanji flash cards, but I prefer this book for learning Kanji. The flash cards are better for review. This book includes common Kanji that I recognize living in Japan and are immediately useful. It also does a great job showing how to write the characters. I have been studying japanese for the last five years, from high school thought my first year of college and see no end to this pass time in sight. I have checked out numerous books and other materials on learning japanese and for learning kanji, none comes as close to perfect as this book and its sequels.
