The award-winning 1937 version of Kipling's classic Captains Courageous finds spoiled-rotten brat Harvey Cheyne (Freddie Bartholomew) well on the way to becoming a horrible adult, under the illusion that money can buy all happiness. The little monster falls off a cruise ship, and is fished out of the drink by Portuguese fisherman Manuel (Spencer Tracy) and brought back to his fishing boat. Though the overprivileged lad initially chafes at being put to work aboard the smelly vessel, he eventually learns the value of a day's work and learns lessons in life that make him a functional person and bring him several steps closer to manhood. Despite Tracy's indeterminate accent, he excels in his role as the boy's friend, and enthusiastic performances from the rest of the cast bring this coming-of-age tale to life. It's a film that has lost none of its sentimental appeal (or occasional hamminess) over the years and should have an all-ages appeal to fans of Hollywood classics. --Jerry Renshaw

I am very pleased. I was truly surprised how quickly I got the movie and started sharing with my grandchildren the joy of a classic movie.

I hadn't seen this film for many years, and my last memory was that this was a very good film I enjoyed when I was young. Well, after re-watching this recently, I was reminded that this is a tremendous film that really packs a punch.
I have seen some criticism about the changing of Kipling's classic and also about the poor Portuguese accent Tracy had. All I can say is, that is not nearly enough of a detractor for a nearly perfect film! I've seen a lot of dramas and a lot of melodramas. ... Read More

Although somewhat dated, "Captains" is still moving, and most of the ship shots aren't stock footage or miniatures -- Fleming shot a real ship, off the coast of California. The cast is excellent (who knew John Carradine was so handsome when young?), and, despite an accent stolen from Chico Marx, Spencer Tracy is powerful, as usual.
Film seems to have been restored for the DVD; it's in excellent shape. Extras include MGM shorts and a cartoon.

This story was written in the late 1800's and filmed in the 1930s. It is a classic story by an excellent and famous writer and the film is well acted and directed. The Scenes and technical production is very impressive especially for the time it was done. I recommend it to you no matter what your age and I wish it could be seen by all school children.

this movie was a great movie, full of adventure and a warm heart touching story. freddie bartholemew plays the part of the spoiled rich kid and does a great job of it. this is a movie every family should see and there is nothing to offend anyone .it is for all ages to enjoy
