Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video: Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made screen history together more than once, but they were never more popular than in this 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, directed by Howard Hawks (To Have and Have Not). Bogart plays private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by a wealthy socialite (Bacall) to look into troubles stirred up by her wild, young sister (Martha Vickers). Legendarily complicated (so much so that even Chandler had trouble following the plot), the film is nonetheless hugely entertaining and atmospheric, an electrifying plunge into the exotica of detective fiction. William Faulkner wrote the screenplay. --Tom Keogh

Humphrey Bogart in The Big Sleep

Humphrey Bogart was probally the big screen's best reprsentive of the hard boiled prive eye, and this film gave him a superlative chance to demonstrate this. the film has been critized for failing to tie up some loose ends-a murder never gets solved, for example-but that aspect simply makes it more realistic. In real life, you always get things that don't add up or fit the general picture. So it's actually more realistic than a move that pretneds to answer all the questions. A superlative movie.

The first -- probably the best -- of the Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall collaborations. Based on Raymond Chandler's classic novel, Bogart takes on the role of LA Private Eye Phillip Marlowe and Bacall as an heiress whose sister has an unsavorary boyfriend who disappears. A terrific film, snappy dialogue, rain slicked streets and vicious hoods. It has it all. Both the release and never released versions are on this DVD.

The story is compelling and will keep you guessing from start to finish, don't miss a minute of it or you'll fall behind.
The actors are amazing. Bogart shows in this movie that he is one of the 5 greatest actors in movie history. He delivers the dialogue like no one can. Bacall shows at such a early point in her ... Read More
