Editorial Review:

Amazon.com:
Robert Aldrich's tense, 1965 drama about a plane crash in the Sahara is a unique psychological study of men in desperate circumstances. In this somewhat revisionist view of classic heroism, every character within the mixed lot is stretched to his limit, and individual efforts to brave the elements and hostile nomads are duly punished. What is left is collective will and ingenuity. One could call this an allegory for transcending Cold War madness, perhaps, but Aldrich (Kiss Me Deadly) makes this such a gritty, immediate experience that you can feel the desert sand in your teeth. Superb performances by James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Hardy Krüger, Peter Finch, and the rest. --Tom Keogh

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Warning: Package contains mutilated work of art!
This version was made from a full screen version where the left and right sides were sliced off. Then the tops and bottoms were sliced off so the image would fit a modern 16:9 monitor. What you see is a small rectangle cut out of the center of the original movie.

The first clue was that the familiar 20th Century Fox logo was cut off on all four sides. When the actors came on screen, it looked like every shot was a closeup. Lots of giant faces, like how they used to shoot TV shows. The ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - DESERT FURY!
A fine motion picture and I believe James Stewart's last. The reviews are spot-on, however, I
noticed that with all the acolades heaped upon the actors, it must also be remembered that
Paul Mantz, one of Hollywood's finest stunt pilots lost his life in the filming of this movie
(Phoennix prototype crashed during last scene), as he was trying to land, in scene which showed
plane disappearing over the mountains. At the end of the film's credits, a memorial mentions
this ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very good -- not the best for repeat viewing.
Flight of the Phoenix is a great movie. It tells the story of a plane crash in the middle of the no-where. With only a limited amount of water -- but luckily a large shipment of dates was onboard -- the crew must decide what to do. Stay and wait? Walk toward civlization?

The characters are interesting and the conflict faced by the hero of the film is difficult.

My only complaint is that this film does not have great repeat value. In my opinion it is simply too slow.

The Bottom Line:

An engaging adventure that is better in almost every way than its more modern remake, The Flight of the Phoenix makes the most out of its interesting premise and desert setting; with a cast of top-flight character actors behind the somewhat-annoying Jimmy Stewart, it's a worthy film.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The definition of a classic
This may not have won any awards, but it is a great story superbly acted by a stellar cast. Infinitely better than the recent trashy remake. The interplay between the characters is finely done and keeps you hooked from start to finish. Best film of 1965 without a doubt and definitely an important addition to anyone's history of cinema collection.
