Although WW 2 was a just war without any doubt and I'm very happy that the allied forces won I must admitt that I'm a bit surprised about the fact that 60 years after the war people still can't get over their prejudices and look at the facts..Every time a german film from the war years is reviewed it begins with" propaganda" etc etc...well, almost ANY american or english film made during those years is as much a propaganda film, yet I never see that label apllied to it . It was always thus : the loosers ... Read More

The wartime german 'Titanic' epic has an obvious bias, but still manages to catch the context of this famous disaster, and has a few moments of genuine drama (and quite a few of pure melodrama). The special effects are quite good for the period. Criticism of the British shipowners is key point (though in fact the Titanic's owners were ultimately the American Mercantile marine co.). I bought this movie out of curosity. It is full of propaganda, and not at all factual in terms of the Titanic, but interesting considering it was done during the war. Not released by the Germans due to the violence of the sinking. Odd considering the death camps etc.. An interesting movie, and as we are learning German, worth the cost.

Once you get past the Nazi propaganda and anti-British sentiments, this 1943 German production of the Titanic tragedy emerges as a fascinating cinematic document. Despite its troubled shoot, the final results are surprisingly compelling, with a good cast and impressive visuals. Running 85 minutes, the German version is preferable to director James Cameron's overblown 1997 epic. The Kino DVD includes an excellent 35mm print and terrific extras. Definitely worth seeing.

"Now money means nothing. Now it's just about survival."
This 1943 version of "Titanic" made in Nazi Germany is not the first sound film of the Titanic story, let alone the first movie devoted to the famous disaster. "Atlantic" (1929) was a fictionalized account (changing the name of the ship) directed by Ewald Andre Dupont in England. In the silent era Pier Angelo Mazzolotti made an Italian "Titanic" in 1915 and in Germany "In Nacht und Eis" ("In Night and Ice") was made by Mime Misu and released ... Read More
