Editorial Review:
Description: On May 2, 1946, six Alcatraz inmates staged a prison mutiny, capturing the cell house and seizing the attention of the country. David Carradine (Kill Bill, Kung Fu), Dennis Farina (Saving Private Ryan, Snatch), and David Morse (The Green Mile, Twelve Monkeys) star in this dramatization of their incredible battle against impossible odds.
Known as Hellcatraz by its prisoners, the maximum security island prison saw eight escape attempts while in operation. By far, the most dramatic breakout was the daring 1946 attempt. Filmed on location at "The Rock," the film's ensemble cast also includes Howard Hesseman (About Schmidt) and Jan Michael Vincent (Buffalo '66).

What a piece of crap movie! Low budget, cheesy acting, looks like a film student filmed and wrote it. Prison inmates try to break out of prison and just all get killed at the end. Sucked.

This movie was an unexpected delight to see. I am not making light of the subject matter, either. This movie is grave in tone but shockingly not nearly as dark as I was expecting.
I freely admit I know nothing about the history of the Rock. I was simply looking for an interesting David Carradine movie to watch...This certainly fit that bill! I admire how this bunch of actors, headed by Carradine, dared and succeeded in showing something rarely seen--let alone with believability--that ... Read More

As a long time follower of Alcatraz and its history, to say that I found this film dissapointing is an understatement. Is heavily influenced by the same titled (and vastly superior) book by Clark Howard.
The story itself centers around six individuals, but mainly Kentucky bank robber Bernard "Bernie" Coy - David Carradine trying his best to drag above a painfully wooden script loaded with the worst of B action movie cliche lines. Coy spent years working on the weaknesses of Alcatraz, arguably ... Read More

Lived up to expectations, having read a couple of accounts of the eacape attempt by different authors. Not a fast paced action type movie, along similar pace as Escape from Alcatraz.

I remember seeing this movie on Channel 4 (NBC) back in 1987, and I'm happy to see that it finally made it to DVD. The first time I saw this movie, I found it very interesting. However, having visited Alcatraz twice in the last 3 years, I have a deeper appreciation of this movie. During the audio tour of Alcatraz, this attempted escape is mentioned, and it adds to the prison's notorious and fascinating history.
The movie basically retells the Battle of Alcatraz, which took place in May ... Read More
