However, being a 'man's man' in the Australian outlook, to avoid embarrassment, he needs a name, a woman's name - and he chooses that of his best friend, Ruby Vale. He must do some fancy footwork to continue the charade when the glamorous city publisher, Ziggy, arrives in dusty outback Lucktown to sign 'Ruby Vale' to a major book deal. Ruby agrees to help Jack though it's for her own gain as well - the publisher will pay for her coming wedding (with Hamish, Jack's buddy). Accompanied by Jack, Ruby goes to Sydney to meet the media, appear on TV and cocktail parties, etc. Gradually, Jack realizes that he has fallen in love with Ruby, while Ruby is also touched by Jack's novel. However, Hamish arrives in Sydney a few days later and asks both of them to stop all these foolish things... SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Australian Film Institute, Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards,

This Australian film is pre-Hollywood Hugh playing an Outback Truck driver who writes a romance novel under his friend Ruby's name. When it becomes a bestseller Ruby has to keep up the facade so the macho cover doesn't get blown. Lots of funny moments and shots of Sydney. A good watch for Hugh fans.

It took a while for me to get a copy of this DVD and a player that would work in the States, but it was well worth the effort. It is a story about friendship, loving and being 'in love'. There are many great scenes between Ruby and Jack, Ruby and Suze, Jack and Hammish, and Jack and Ziggy. It's not a movie that you fast forward through the dull spots.
One of my favorites along with "Kate and Leopold" and "Sleepless in Seattle". I loved it!

Yes, I bought it because of Hugh Jackman. Then enjoyed the glimpse of the outback, and the sweet story of people growing in love because they like each other. Interesting that despite its being a "romance" the woman had a job, and a non-traditional one as well. Nice supporting performances and gorgeous scenery added benefits.

I have heard so much about this film, and want very much to see it. When will it appear in a format we can watch in the U.S.?

I bought this film only because Hugh Jackman is in it, but was pleasantly surprised when I honestly enjoyed the film! (Mr. Jackman is just an added bonus!)
It is a sweet, simple love story, gently told. A teasing relationship covers up deeper feelings between two friends, Jack (Hugh Jackman) & Ruby (Claudia Karvan), in the Australian Outback. The two are thrown closer together when Jack's romance novel is published under Ruby's name and he asks her to keep up the facade.
