Description:
In the tradition of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, PSYCHO and DELIVERANCE comes this chilling Belgian horror that pushes the limits of shock filmmaking. Director and co-writer Fabrice Du Welz masterfully evokes a sense of deeply disturbing terror as Marc Stevens’ world goes profoundly and utterly wrong. When his car breaks down in the middle of the isolated backcountry, he’s forced to seek refuge in a rural inn. Marc is taken in by Bartel, a lonely and psychologically fragile innkeeper who promises to help. But when Marc catches him dismantling his car, he realizes that the innkeeper has other plans for him – sadistic plans that will push him to the bounds of human pain and suffering.

I gotta admit, I'm completely flummoxed by some of the great reviews for this film. Derivative and unintentionally funny--just watch the bar scene in which the local men dance like drunken, sex-starved penguins and you'll know what I mean--this movie was a chore to sit through. Similar to another reviewer, I couldn't believe how pathetic the "hero" becomes when he is captured. And what's with all the men thinking this guy's a woman? The twisted, bizarre story of Calvaire where madness and perversion are the themes, rocked me to the core. Throughout, my eyes were glued to the screen and my jaw on the ground; however, nothing in the film was done for shock value and every line and action had meaning. At the end, the viewer is left with plenty to dissect and ponder. If you want a glimpse into the truly insane, Calvaire delivers.

This film pulls its punches at every opportunity.
The violence is off screen. The terror is implied; the gore minimal, the horror non-existent. Tension is sought only through the use of a long and boring introduction: It's almost 50 minutes before anything happens. I assume this is supposed to offset the mundane against "The Ordeal" to come. i liked it but i have to say it was slow especially at the end. i was expecting some sort of more of a climax and didn't get anything of the sort. what i really enjoyed was the twisted character of Bartel (the progression of Bartel went from just being sort of an odd bird to truely twisted was nice) and the actor did a great job. could have done without the little scene of beastiality. again i don't want to say too much since some people may not have seen it and i don't want to spoil it for anyone. ... I did enjoy this film, found two scenes absolutely brilliant (the dance scene, and the overhead shot of the mayhem going on the cottage near the end), and was left haunted by the ending (which is ambiguous but - SPOILER ALERT!!!!! - I think it's implied that Marc is wandering the woods insane).
However, I found two important plot points to be completely unbelievable and in fact extremely irritating. They are:
