But whena stroke of fate puts him in the ring with a world heavyweight champion Rocky knows that it's his one shot at the big time - a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go the distance and come out a winner! *1976: Actor (Stallone) Actress (Talia Shire) Supporting Actor (Burgess Meredith Burt Young) Director (won) Original Screenplay Original Song Editing (won) SoundSystem Requirements:Running Time: 120Format: BLU-RAY DISC Genre: DRAMA Rating: PG UPC: 027616063489 Manufacturer No: M106348
Amazon.com: The only remaining evidence that Sylvester Stallone might have had a respectable career, this 1976 Oscar® winner (for Best Picture, Director, and Editing) is still the quintessential ode to an underdog and one of the best boxing movies ever made. After writing the script about a two-bit boxer who gets a "million-to-one shot" against the world heavyweight champion, Stallone insisted that he star in the title role, and his equally unknown status helped to catapult him (and this rousing film) to overnight success. The story is familiar, but it's handled with such vitality and emotional honesty that you can't help but leap and cheer for Rocky Balboa, the chump-turned-champ who stuns the boxing world with the support of his timid girlfriend Adrian (Talia Shire) and grizzled trainer Gus (Burgess Meredith). Oscar nominations went to all the lead actors (including Burt Young as Adrian's hot-tempered brother), but four sequels could never top the universal appeal of this low-budget crowd pleaser. --Jeff Shannon

Quite simply the best version of Rocky 1 ever made. This version has extended scenes that you do not get with the regular Rocky. This is a must have for anyone who loves the Rocky Series. Even if you have Rocky 1 you should still get the special edition version.

I would think this has to be possibly the best movie ever and so rated as #1 when any discussions of such movies comes up. Its the only movie I come back to see again and again. I think I have seen it six times to date. It has excellent lines throughout, and also has excellent music. It has a humble atmosphere throughout, setting up the next 5 Rocky movies; where Rocky fights with complacent attitude, because of money and fame. Big budget films have an atmosphere of a spoiled director and actors, ... Read More

Well they say the first is always the best , and in this case that is the story here. The old rags to riches story but in this case the film ends on a good note where Rocky does not win the title but ends up a winner in every other aspect.Great performances from Burgess Meredith and Carl Weathers and not forgetting Burt Young as Paulie. For a publicity stunt the world champion Apollo Creed decides to give a unknown a shot at the title , with nearly disasterous results for him at the end of the film.A ... I really like the original Rocky movie. I forgot how amazing the writing is.
I mean, come on- it's about a boxer who has to compete in the biggest match of his life thus far in his young and already pretty beat-up career. How can you make a great storyline out of a rather lackluster idea?
By having the story focus significantly on the boxers life, and by featuring a steady and quiet storyline build-up to please those of us who love a good drama, and even include a charming ... Read More

You have to give Sylvester Stallone credit for writing himself a starring vehicle, and then getting it made. He also more or less created the "Sports Underdog Triumphs
In The End" genre. That said, that fact that this embarrassingly over-acted film beat out ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, BOUND FOR GLORY, NETWORK and TAXI DRIVER for the
Best Film of 1976 is absolutely mind-boggling, and becomes more so with each passing
year. Strictly for Sly fans, and anyone who wonders what was in The Academy's ... Read More
