Editorial Review:
Product Description: A lively, historically informed, and definitive guide to classic American cocktails.
Cocktail writer and historian David Wondrich presents the colorful, little-known history of classic American drinks-and the ultimate mixologist's guide-in this engaging homage to Jerry Thomas, father of the American bar.
Wondrich reveals never-before-published details and stories about this larger-than-life nineteenth-century figure, along with definitive recipes for 100 punches, cocktails, sours, fizzes, toddies, slings, and other essential drinks, plus twenty new recipes from today's top mixologists, created exclusively for this book.
This colorful and good-humored volume is a mustread for anyone who appreciates the timeless appeal of a well-made drink-and the uniquely American history behind it.

I enjoy trying out different cocktails and I enjoy learning about their history, so I was very much looking forward to this book. I do appreciate its content, however the writing style obscures the content, in my opinion. The author's frequent use of "witty" or "period" turns of phrase beomes tiresome. The book reads like the author is in his cups and holding forth to the other patrons of a bar... Probably better if you're in your cups too, but I am a sober reader...

I bought this as a gift, but read it after giving it. The history of mixed drinks in America is at your fingertips here. It's an entertaining book than dismantled many misconceptions.

This is a hugely informative read, great bio information. The quality of the writing is a bit loose, slangy, coarse. But I'm enjoying getting to know Jerry, the seminal American bartender.

It was a delight to read about one of the true pioneers of American Bartending. I actually read completely through this without putting it down. Mr. Wondrich is giving us something that has been missing in our country's history books - a factual history of one of America's acheivements - the origins of the modern-day mixologist.
Being a bartender myself, it is nice to finally have an idea as to what and when the beginnings of my occupation transpired. Thank you for giving me, and those like ... Read More

Quite simply the greatest and most scholarly work on the history and culture of the cocktail to date. This book will change your life.
