The tumbling blond locks and preternaturally white smile of Jessica Simpson brighten up Private Valentine. Megan Valentine (Simpson), the fluffy star of many talking animal movies, discovers her accountant has embezzled all her money and her boyfriend is gay. Thinking it will help her gain control over her life, she blithely signs up for the army--but independent thinking is not exactly what the army has in mind. She and her multi-ethnic platoon-mates bond over midnight chocolate raids, disco dancing, and digging up an embarrassing past secret of her drill sergeant (Vivica A. Fox, not exactly convincing as a hard-as-nails soldier). But will she gain the respect she most craves--her own? Private Valentine is a flimsy retread of Goldie Hawn's classic 1980 comedy Private Benjamin. But despite its many, many flaws--most significantly, after humiliating her platoon repeatedly, Valentine wins them over far too easily--Private Valentine is so puppy-dog eager to please that it's hard to dislike. Simpson cheerfully makes fun of herself and clearly wants to escape her sex-bomb image (the movie puts very little emphasis on her curves). Also featuring Steve Guttenberg, Cheri Oteri, and an actually funny (and all too brief) appearance by Michael Hitchcock (Best In Show, Waiting for Guffman). --Bret Fetzer

Good film...realistic. Some might be off base, but not entirely unbelievable. Jessica Simpson does a wonderful job with this plot.

I'm betting your liking this film may hinge partly on where you stand on the whole Jessica Simpson thing. Do you love her, loathe her, don't give a dang about her? Me, I don't think much of her singing and I'm leaning towards tepid when it comes to her acting skills. But I think it's beyond debate that she's a straight-up stunner, and my feeling is that she's kind of gotten a bum rap from the press and paparazzi. It was okay overall, there were some part where I was scratching my head going "What? That doesn't happen in basic" and etc.

Was there even a director in this movie? It hurt me to watch Jessica's performance because I love her! Not a great storyline either. Buy this only if you're a Jess fan.

I honestly don't know why so many people hate this movie! I thought it had a great storyline, and was extremely funny! Sexy beautiful Jessica Simpson plays Megan Valentine, an actress who loses everything after doing a bad movie. She thinks joining the Army will take care of her problems. She soon realizes the Army is tough and not how her life used to be. She tries to get out, but the drill Sergeants give her a hard time. She soon makes friends and begins to like it.
