Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Two sales clerks in a budapest shop dislike each other but inadvertently fall in love while corresponding as pseudonymous pen pals. Studio: Warner Home Video Release Date: 04/05/2005 Starring: James Stewart Frank Morgan Run time: 100 minutes Rating: Nr

Amazon.com essential video:
One of the most charming and romantic films around, this 1940 comic romance finds James Stewart (Vertigo, It's A Wonderful Life) working in a small shop in Budapest and longing for a girl to call his own. His coworker, Margaret Sullavan, feels the same, and soon they are both corresponding and falling in love with their respective pen pals. What they don't realize is that they are writing to and falling in love with each other, but the problem is that they can't stand each other in person. The beguiling nature of the mistaken identity formula that influenced countless films is done to perfection here, and the wry combativeness and delightful banter between the two leads makes this a very special film. --Robert Lane

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Very enjoyable
This was a very enjoyable movie. Jimmy Stewart fans will not be disappointed. It's humorous, sweet, and does a good job on the sensitive subject matter that is included in the story. I highly recommend it.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - NOT FOR ME
BOUGHT FOR MY SISTER AT HER REQUEST. SHE LOVES 'YOU'VE GOT MAIL' AND THOUGHT SINCE IT WAS BASED ON THIS MUCH EARLIER VERSION THAT SHE WOULD LIKE IT. SHE WAS DISAPPOINTED, BUT YOU HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE IN 'THEN AND NOW' IN FILMS. WE ARE SPOILED TO CURRENT TECHNOLOGIES AND ACTORS.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - kinda slow
I expected more. Maybe I just like the remake (You've got Mail) better. Tried to watch this several times, but I fall asleep. Not Jimmy Stewart's best. Others in household don't care for it either. ????????????

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The Lubitsch Touch Never Looked Better
One of Ernst Lubitsch's greatest films comes to DVD here. I can't speak as to the quality of the transfer, but to this layman it seems well-done and the disc has plenty of extras. This package shows just how much better the film is than its remake, YOU'VE GOT MAIL.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - One of the best movies ever
I love this movie. I first saw it at the library and checked it out. There have been several movies made with the same theme. I believe it is based on a play which was based on a book. You've Got Mail is the currently well-known one and was based on this movie. The case is simple and the dvd works great, but the film itself isn't perfect by most modern standards. It is old and not in color and Hungary looks more like Hollywood. Only a few actors use accents, the rest speak normally. At times ... Read More
