Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - RAINDROPS AND ROSES AND FEAR AND LOATING IN LAS VEGAS
Hunter S. Tompson's version of Fear and Loathing landed him to ask his ex-girl friend who had all the rights to the book to make a movie. Did you know that Jack Nicholson and Marlon Brando were suppose to be Daul and Dr. Gonzo!

And did you know that John Cusack, came in for the part to play Hunter. But in the end when the real Hunter S. Thomspon saw Johnny Depp, that was it, that was his man.

There are 3 versions of DVDS out there, the standarded one disc, the HD DVD one and this one.

Please get this one. It has amazing commentary, booklet and behind the scenes footage. Get it! It is recommended! :)

Narration straight from the book and as close as you can get to its brilliance....'my arrival was poorly timed'!PILATE: A Brutal Bible Tale

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Wild ride
I skipped this for quite a while because of what fans of the book had said, and while I've read the book and enjoyed it, I have to say, having recently caught this, it is amazing. I am a fan of Gilliam, Depp, and del Torro, and decided to watch it. The best thing I can say is go into it with no expectations. A lot of times people judge movies and books by the same criteria, and I don't think a "one size fits all" criteria is the best way to judge. Now, to the movie.

First, I laughed so hard and so prolonged that the first time through this movie I stopped it probably 3 times. I couldn't stand it. Performances are uncanny: del Torro is sickeningly over the top and Depp is at the edge of his classic in-stride dead-pan demeanor, but he is dead-pan enough to give a false sense of in-control. Dialogue is wonderful too. This is a smash-fest, folks. They smoke and ingest everything from cigarettes to ether and everything in between. I mean everything. Ever see Under the Volcano? Albert Finney has always been credited with turning in such a realistic performance as an alcoholic, which he did do; well, that's tame compared to this. Ridiculously tame. This is at the very fringe of mainstream films, and I'd be surprised if it would be made even today, a decade later. They (Depp / del Torro) are completely smashed from the beginning to the end to the point that they can barely walk. In fact, they often can't, and in one scene they approach a turnstile to be admitted to a circus-like attraction. Unable to walk, the quasi-Napoleonic guards at the turnstiles pick them up and throw them through the turnstiles. It's crazy. The two hotel rooms they mostly stay in are trashed beyond trashed when they leave - almost to the point (flooding one) that I think some of it is in their heads, because with the state they leave the second room in, I can't believe they could even trash it that badly without ruining the rest of the hotel.

What's the American Dream they are "in search of"? Well, as they say, they are at the "main artery" of the American Dream, in Vegas. Make money, vacation, and spend it. And Vegas is a "center" for it. Depp and del Torro are tanked on their complement of drugs whereas everyone else is intoxicated on making and spending money (as with the irate cop from Michigan, whose hotel reservation is "late"). The ironic thing is that in ingesting hallucinogens, Gonzo sees what's "really" going on. I don't know if he consciously realizes it or not, but what the heck, this is a keeper if you don't take it seriously. Great ending to "Jumpin' Jack Flash" too! Loved it. Great way to unwind.

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - 2 Hours of Nothing that Leads toward Nothing
I heard many people rave about this movie and then I watched it for myself and nothing ever happened really in the movie to me. It just seemed like 2 hours that lead nowhere. I'll watch anything once all the way through. Will never watch this bad movie again though.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "Too weird to live, to rare to die"
I wanted to buy the movie years ago--when it first came out--but I was too poor. Then I saw this box set in a store--I thought "I had to get it". I went home and bought it on Amazon and it is still fantastic-esp with behind the scenes. I would recommend this to anyone who loves weirdness.
