Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - A powerful superhero film
Everyone's friendly neighborhood Spider-Man starts his beginnings of his superhero life. There are a lot of things to enjoy about Spider-Man such as great characters and villains, plenty of superhero web swings and eye-popping action sequences. Tobey Maguire does a great job and he fits well to Peter Parker. Not only that, yeah, Kirsten Dunst is a show-off, but she does fit her role as Mary Jane Watson -- and even James Franco fits his role as Harry Osborne. This film starts off with Spider-Man going against the Green Goblin, which totally freaked me out as a youngster, but looking at his acting performances and what he did in the film, it was quite well-done. A great superhero movie to enjoy. I did enjoy Spider-Man 2, but not as much as this one, but I will definitely see Spider-Man 3.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The first of the 'great' superhero movies!
I remember when this film was first released, the immediate buzz and praise it received, and the expression on my face after the credits began to roll. I was in utter awe, and rightfully so. Until `Batman Begins' there hadn't been a single superhero movie that could compare. `Spider-Man' marks the beginning of the `serious' superhero film, the film that's more about plot and relationships then about high adrenaline action sequences (although they are here in large heaping amounts). Sam Raimi and David Koepp brought to life one of the most revered and beloved comic book heroes and did so brilliantly.

First smart move was the casting choices. Tobey Maguire was a genius choice for Peter Parker. Peter Parker was a nerdy loner and looking at Tobey you'd assume the same for him. He has that awkward appearance, that fearful and cautious step and that guilt written all over his face. He plays this role perfectly. Kirsten Dunst was also a wonderful pick for Mary Jane Watson, Peters love interest. Anyone would have to be blind not to fall in love with her. Willem Dafoe finally impressed me, mostly because the role of Norman Osborn (the Green Goblin) just seems like the role he was born to perform, and James Franco is good as Harry, Norman's son, although he (it this film at least) is more background noise.

The second smart move was making this a much more `bright' superhero film. What I mean is, instead of following the darker subtext of films like the original `Batman' or `Daredevil', `Spider-Man' is almost a happy film. It never falls into camp, like the horrid `Batman & Robin', but it keeps things on the up and up, cheery and...happy. Yes I know it deals with issues like the death of Peter's Uncle Ben and the psychosis of a said crazy Green Goblin, but the action and animation is done in such bright, crisp way that the mood is never heavy and never detracts from the enjoyment of the film.

The third smart move was taking the time to really develop the main characters and explain the origin of Spider-Man, never rushing into things nor bogging the film down with `too-much' information, but giving us a perfect balance. By the end of the film you truly care about Peter and his plight. He's more than just an action-hero...he's a human being with real problems and distractions and concerns and you want him to succeed. You want him to `get-the-girl'.

`Spider-Man' will probably be remembered as the first of the `great' superhero movies. Finally a superhero film was taken serious, was worked and brought to cinematic perfection, not taken lightly and thrown together, but molded into a great movie. It breaks itself away from the mold of generic superhero action film and becomes, in of its own, a brilliant MOVIE...one that everyone can and should enjoy!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - A Dissenting Opinion!
The visual effects in this movie were really dreadful, comparable to a cheap video game-- I can't understand why so many people were impressed by them. Spiderman moves like a puppet, the Green Goblin looks like some ridiculous power-ranger... they should have tried to do a little bit less with CGI figures, and shot more of the action with dancers or acrobats. Also, I can't understand why they put that raised plastic ribbing on Spiderman's costume; it looks awful and it is unfathomable how a broke teenager could make such a thing. Killing the Green Goblin was a bad dramatic choice-- in the original comic book series Norman Osborn remained alive for years, alternating between amnesia and psychosis. This situation put Peter Parker in a state of perpetual anxiety and moral conflict and created great suspense in the storyline; one never knew when Osborn would slip into his mania again.

In spite of these problems, I liked the melodramatic aspects of the film a lot. The actors were likeable and the story was touching and well-told. It seemed strange that in a film like this the action scenes ended up being the weakest elements!

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition)
Spider-Man (Widescreen Special Edition)~ Tobey Maguire is a brilliant super hero movie. Sam Raimi has written a stupendous script and picked the right actors to be in it. Tobey Maguire is brilliant in the role of Spider-man and Defoe is sublime in the role of the Goblin. Kirsten Dunst is so cute and adorable and the perfect love interest for spider-man. The special effects are well made and I must say that I was very surprised by the overall quality of the movie. Great music, well written dialog and action scenes that were action packed and not overly violent. I highly recommend this movie and give it 5 stars. I can not wait to watch part 2.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility...
I was hoping they would come out with Spider-Man on the big screen. I am a big superhero fan. Well, the movie eventually did come out and I saw it in the theater. It did not fall short. Character development was right on. You really get the picture that Peter Parker is struggling through life, and then gets these amazing powers that transform his life but do not remove hardship. With his new powers, he has the added burden to carry. A crime-fighting superhero is born. Start here, then see Spider-Man 2. The story continues...
