This is the one movie version of the life, death and resurrection of Christ that I have truly loved watching. I would recommend watching Jesus of Nazareth by anyone who truly wishes to learn more of the story of His birth, life, and interaction with His disciples--and how He was so cruelly crucified, ultimately for all of mankind's sake--then, who wish to thrill at how death could not overpower and contain Him, because they believe Him to actually be Who He claimed to be--the Son of the Living God.

Even after thirty years, Franco Zeffirelli's "Jesus of Nazareth" remains the greatest film on the life of Christ ever made. I can honestly say watching this film 30 years ago changed my life. I'd easily give it five stars, but the DVD transfer was INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING. As another reviewer said, I felt like I was just watching an old VHS tape (which I already own).

I saw this movie when it was first aired on TV in 1977, and I have never forgotten it. I was absolutely overwhelmed by it! The acting, the direction by Zefferelli, the complexity of the background to Jesus's life--everything about this movie is incomparable! Yes, it is very long (six hours!!) but I promise you, it is worth every minute!! If I could only suggest one movie about the life of Christ to anyone, this is WITHOUT QUESTION the one I would recommend! It brings first-century Palestine to life so vividly, and the story is so incredibly moving (not to mention the acting, particularly by Robert Powell in the role of Christ) that I guarantee it will be a movie you will want to watch over and over. It is SUPERB, REVERENT movie-making--you cannot watch it without being moved to tears! If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would!!!

If you're into Christianity, this movie (mini-series, actually) is for you. Characters like John the Baptist, the apostles, Mary Magdalene, and the Jewish elders are fleshed out, adding interesting and exciting detail to familiar stories. Michael York portrays a scarily zealous John the Baptist who shows his disdain for Herod's wife in one memorable scene. Anthony Quinn is an anguished Caiaphas, presiding over the elders' debate of the question, who is this man? Peter Ustinov is an exquisite Herod the Great. A star-studded cast makes this great entertainment from beginning to end. A blue-eyed Jesus sounds strange at first. I heard somewhere that they did this on purpose as a subtle way to make him stand out from the others. Anyway, it worked and it was not distracting at all. Powell was a very credible Jesus, and this DVD set tells his story beautifully, bringing it to life with rich detail that adds to our understanding of that time.
