The fact is that many gay indie films have poor production values and inconsistent acting, so reviewers who are comparing this to a big-budget studio film are making an unfair comparison. What I liked about this film was that it is unapologetically gay. The gayness of the characters is not a big deal, and is neither the source of a standing joke (as in "Will and Grace") nor the cause of all their problems.
Instead, the film explores these admittedly flawed but interesting characters as they stumble through several days. I agree with the reviewer who wished that the character of Sam had been better developed. I also felt that even for an indie film, the dialogue was sometimes extremely difficult to understand, and this is a technical problem that should have been fixed.
However, I felt that many of the characters were likeable (not necessarily sexy, but that's a separate issue) and I cared enough about them to want to know how the film ended. I found that I was still thinking about the film long after I finished watching it.

Yes, I know gay indie films are often low-budget and fall short in many regards, but that in itself doesn't stop me from enjoying a gay film that actually says something. This film seemed to be so concerned about being deep and portentious that many of the most basic elements of a film (plot, character believability and motivation, character development) were either not considered at all, or just de-prioritized. The film is a poorly-made confusing jumble of scenes about characters we never care about, and who don't even have the benefit of at least being nice to look at as we watch them ham-handedly deliver their clinkers of dialogue. Who do I contact to get these two hours of my life back??

The first time I saw this film I was disappointed with the loopy story and irritating "poetry" interspersed in the dialog. But long after I sent the movie back, I was thinking about it and so I rented it again.
If you can overlook a few flaws in the form of narrated "poetry," unnecessary and unsubstantiated plot twists, and a grisly, amateurish sound track, there is some substance here to appreciate.
The actors are decent, the story is decent, and the main character physically and mentally wrestles with his feelings of affection and love for others. He states that he feels like he is in love with about 20 people a day, and that is the majority of the basis for this film and its examination of love in its various forms.
Most notably, this film takes place in a world that is mostly, if not totally gay, and the sexuality of the characters is never an issue. This leaves lots of room for the twenty-something angst of confusing feelings and the search for the "true" or real love (apart from simply lust.)
This is certainly an independent film with some rough edges, but it's edgy to a fault and daring and generally successful as it follows one man's path as he searches for love (mostly while it's all around him.)

It's a sad state of affairs when a low budget flick has more money than talent. There isn't much money thrown at Luster yet at times there seems to be even less in the way of talent.
To be fair there are some rattling moments - mostly in the sped up, tagged on tragic ending. Truth be told there is a decent story here, just poorly told and, for the most part, horribly acted.
There's a great indie film of post-metro-sexual revolution story of friendship, love and lust gone wrong buried somewhere in all of this. It's still waiting to be made.

Having ordered this movie and being very excited about watching (having read the synopsis and seeing the picture on the front cover!!) I was VERY disappointed not only with the plot (or lack of one) but of the scratchy dialogue, poor acting and the obviously very low budget given to the making of the film.
Just goes to show - never judge a DVD by the sleve jacket picture!
I'm not saying it was the worst film I've ever forced myself to watch all the way through, but for a gay R18 movie I was extremely disappointed. Why it is rated R18 is totally beyond me as the only adult themes that 'pop up' once or twice is a supposed rape scene - which is not shown and is supposed to have been carried out by a real wimp of a character on a hunky straight (?) and fit cousin Jed (highly unlikely) and a 'couple' of full frontal newdy shots of Jed (nothing to write home to Dorothy about!). Apart from that there is a couple of gay kisses (shock horror!) and the suggestion of masochism (although again - hardly explicit).
I feel DUPED at having bought this movie - if anyone wants to buy it from me at a VERY REDUCED RATE - please email me at cazzouk@hotmail.com. I'll be only too glad to mail it to you (once the funds have cleared!) :)
