Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great movie
One of the most unappreciated movies by Sean Connery. To those who have read the book, it will seem like they left out a lot of the story, to those who haven't, this is a great detective story.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A great labyrinth of mystery brought to the screen
This really is one of the better historical murder mystery movies out there. Despite a few flaws it is well worth watching and even owning for mystery fans. Surprisingly it is rather unheralded, even though it features three great actors including Sean Connery at his best, a young Christian Slater, Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham, and a host of other recognizable late-80s extras.

The original book by Umberto Eco is a rather brilliant work, and easily the best of his novels (and most readable). And though the movie doesn't even come close to the complexity of the book, it does a good job creating a dark, suspenseful atmosphere and generates plenty of interest in the murder plot and the loosely connected controversies of abbey and Church that surround it. Although both the movie and Eco's book share a rather simplistic (and gradually being debunked) understanding of the Middle Ages (i.e. "Dark" Ages; Church = oppressive and against reason, etc.), it's nothing worse than anything else in popular culture (See Regine Pernoud's book "Those Terrible Middle Ages" for a good start on some of that debunking).

But given its limitations the movie succeeds quite well in transporting the viewer into its world -- highly recommended for any lovers of mysteries, or anyone who loved running through mazes as a kid or looking for secret passages in old houses.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - excelente!!!!!!!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Murder Monastery
This is a great movie-- see Christian Slater before he was a big name. Anyone who enjoys murder mysteries will enjoy this one. Sean Connery plays a wonderful medieval Sherlock Holmes type.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Enjoyable
This is the only film that I saw after having read the original book that did not disappoint me in its rendering. Though it cannot translate all the intricate levels of reading this book has (no film ever could ) it is a very good telling of the storyline and transports the viewer pretty much into the atmosphere of that medieval convent and the ambiance of the times. All in all a very good way to spend an evening
