Producer George Pal took a lot of liberties with the original H.G.Wells source material, updating the setting from turn-of-the-century England to contemporary America. That decision was driven by, in part, by budgetary concerns (though at $2 million it was one of the most expensive science fiction films produced in its day). But Pal also felt that his audience wouldn't find the novel's tripod war machines very menacing. Of course, Steven Spielberg managed to do just that in his version. That said, Pal still retained the core of the novel. It all works wonderfully, aided by a cast of B-Movie regulars, who seemed to be inspired by Pal's serious treatment of the story. The two leads, Gene Barry and Anne Robinson, are pretty terrific as the handsome scientist and his lady. The latter issued one cinema's most memorable screams when confronted by a Martian in a fallen farm house. The look of the aliens and their sleek war machines was brilliantly original for its time and the visuals were considered good enough to win the 1953 Best Oscar for Special Effects. Though the industry has moved light years ahead in technique and computer imagery, this 1953 gem is still highly entertaining.

In a time when there are so many remakes, they just can't surpass the originals in most instances. War of the Worlds is an example of that. The newer version featuring Tom Cruise does not hold a candle to this earlier version. The special effects for the times of this movie are great. While you can't compare yester-year's effects to modern technology, this original version has more feel to it, more emotion, more truth to it. The newer version is just too much drama.

I first saw this memorial film as a small child at the United Atist Theater in San Francisco, and was totally fascinated. It created enough interest in me to inspire the reading of this and other H.G. Wells works. Seeing this film on the big screen again as an adult, did not dilute the fascination for me. Everything about this flilm stands up against modern technology driven film making. The Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg version was without story, and even made it difficult to cheer for the "good guys," with completely wasted special effects. No such problems here in a completely story driven look at earth's first invasion, supplimented by Oscar Winning Special Effects of the day. If you're from a different genration, and have not seen it, you will be delighted. If you saw it years ago, check it out again in this special edition. You won't be disappointed, and will be reminded of a time when films leaned on more than digital effects, to draw an audience into the fantasy.

I find this Copy of the Classic War Of The Worlds made in 1955,to be the best of all that I have. I also own one that was made in 1948,and now included in my collection The New War Of The World with Tom Cruise, This is very good Remake because it is set in our time period and the Action is very good & well done. Still I find the 1955 verison to be the best of them all. Thank U, Jerry
