I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF THESE GREAT MOVIES FOR MANY YEARS NOW BUT MY COPYS WERE ON VHS AND THE QUALITY WAS IN SOME CASES POOR TO GOOD.
AFTER PURCHASING THE COMPLEAT SET I FEEL AS IF I AM SEEING THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE DVD'S ARE PRISTEEN AND HAVE COMONTARYS AND SUBTITLES IF YOU WISH. IF YOU LOVE THESE GREAT MYSTERYS DON'T WAIT ANY LONGER. YOU WONT REGRET IT. ITS ELIMENTARY BUY IT!

Over the years, I have purchased the cheap knockoffs of these movies in the bargain bins at my local retailer and have been at least happy to watch these old films. They take me back to a time of watching PBS (1 of only 5 tv stations we could get at the time) at my grandmother's house on a lazy Sunday afternoon. When I had read that the UCLA Film and Television Archive had remastered these, I knew these would be on my wish list.
I finally received them and was totally blown away. The depth of the picture and sound exceeds anything I had seen previously. Also, the bonus of all of the films in one package made this a no-brainer.
I have included a couple of screen caps in the customer images to give you an idea of the difference of quality. If you are unsure whether this is as good or better than the $5 per movie sets at your local retailer, take a look and see which you prefer.
I do agree with other people that the packaging could have been a lot better but I am more interested in the films themselves.

I bought this collection for my husband (who is a Sherlock Holmes fan) and he loved them! He spent days watching episode after episode.

The restoration is very well done. The commentary, where available, is at least adequate and usually insightful. A more complete commentary would have been nice. The only serious drawback to this collection is the English subtitles. Apparently done by a group of freshmen students on weekend when they would have rather been at the beach. Too inconvenient to research words that they are unfamiliar with they simply choose to insert a place holder. They do not bother to translate any foreign languages either, but they enjoy introducing anachronisms such as Ms for Miss.
If the subtitles are not necessary for you, I recommend this restored version without reservation. Happily, the visual component of the restoration is done with care and professionalism.

I don't own this set only because of the apparent poor quality. Holmes fans shouldn't have to settle for a second rate reproduction. Too bad, I was looking forward to purchasing the set but I didn't because of the owner's bad reviews.
