Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Cold War Atmosphere Abounds in GoldenEye
GOLDENEYE is a fantastic `post-cold war' espionage film. Pierce Brosnan's screen personification of James Bond is one of the best since Sean Connery and before Mister Craig's performance in CASINO ROYALE. Many of us expected a lighter interpretation of the character but we were pleasantly surprised. Instead Brosnan gave a very no-nonsense performance of Fleming's dedicated civil servant. We even get a Fleming-like villain named Xenia Onatopp deliriously played by Famke Janssen thrown in for good measure. Several of the production crew did their best work on this film. Derek Meddings' miniature work is the best of the series. Composer Eric Sera gave us one of the most innovative scores since John Barry. This was a new James Bond entering a new era and the music was right on target. There must be a very large army of lobbyists out there who just will not give up on the notion that John Barry's way is the only way. Unfortunately this is Eric Sera's only James Bond score. It was good to see Desmond Llewelyn return as "Q" and give Brosnan a good step in the right direction. It was good to see the Astin Martin DB5 again. They had to retain a little bit of continuity. I thought the action scenes in this film were excellently filmed especially the fight between Bond and Trevelyan inside the satellite dish. It was pretty intense. All in all this is a good James Bond film. It is moody and very atmospheric depicting a world where Bond may have outgrown his usefulness.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Dark and Impressive Bond Film
GOLDENEYE is Pierce Brosnan's first film as James Bond. I think many of the older Bond fans expected a performance in the vein of Roger Moore. Surprisingly, Brosnan seems more like a hybrid of Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton, combing the best elements that each brought to the role. He possesses intelligence, wit, charm and dedication and delivers these with no-nonsense passion and drive.

Martin Campbell's direction is on target. GOLDENEYE is a great looking film beautifully filmed by Phil Meheux for mood, atmosphere and action. Some of the film's high points are the miniatures by Derek Meddings. This is probably Derek Meddings' best work in the series. Production Designer Peter Lamont shows greater depths with each Bond film he works on. This is some of his best work since OCTOPUSSY and the massive underground mine he designed for A VIEW TO A KILL. The return of the Astin Martin DB5 is a very welcome sight. Eric Serra's original if controversial score is good in retrospect complementing the work of Meheux and Lamont. Serra's interpretation of "The James Bond Theme" over the opening gun barrel trademark is powerful and very innovative. One cannot appreciate Serra's contribution to this film unless the audio is played through a surround stereo system with a good amount of bass and volume pumped up.

I think Martin Campbell's efforts as a director were greatly overlooked. Watching his CASINO ROYALE you can see the amount of realism, believability and haunting mood he wanted injected not only into the film but into the character of James Bond exploring his motivations and getting into his psyche. This is one of the better Bond films.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Probably one of my favorite Bond films
Now just because it's my favorite doesn't mean it's the best overall (I'm slightly more partial to From Russia With Love) but I was roughly 12 when I first saw Goldeneye and honestly, it was awesome. That awesome went into a different stratosphere of awesome when the classic Goldeneye videogame was released for the Nintendo 64. When it comes down to favorite Bonds, mine tends to be Sean Connery but there's always a place for Pierce Brosnan, especially since this was the first Bond film I ever saw. It kickstarted the series, gave us a new Bond and it was all the better for it.

During an infiltration of a weapons facility, 006 Alec Trevelyan is captured and apparently killed leaving 007 James Bond having to escape. 9 nine years later, an experimental helicopter is stolen and its theft is linked to the Janus Crime Syndicate. This is linked to the theft of the Goldeneye, a twin pair of satellites that when detonated, triggers an EMP (electromagnetic pulse), capable of frying anything with a circuit board. With help of Natalya, a Russian computer programmer, Bond has to stop Janus a.k.a his old friend Alec Trevelyan and stop his plan for what else? world domination.

After the financial and critical failure of License to Kill, it took a good 6 years before Goldeneye came out. And with it came a new Bond, replacing Timothy Dalton. Dalton in a way was an admirable Bond to like but hard to absolutely love. Brosnan, ultimately, is probably my 2nd favorite Bond after Connery. While the more intense persona isn't seen, he nails that playboy-esque side of 007 as well as the resourceful and knowledgeable side who can shoot his way through anything. However the subsequent films relied a bit too heavily on action and big stunts so the more character side kind of got sidetracked.

Maybe it's because I've played the game sooo many times but the film almost seems better than it is. Yeah it's very loud and very action-intensive but there's also a bit of character-related moments that I liked seeing, such as Bond getting chewed out by a new M (Judi Dench) or the night before Bond is to infiltrate an enemy stronghold, knowing his friend is the main enemy. To me it's a very succesful entry in the Bond franchise that would have another good entry with Tomorrow Never Dies but the latest 2 were kind of awful.

Is it a great Bond film? Well I'm probably the wrong guy to ask. Since this was my first one, there's an obvious bias to it and while it would'nt eclipse some of the better ones, there is an accessibility to it that I find enduring.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - the Best James Bond Movie
The first time Pierce Brosnan played the legendary agent 007 was in 1995's "Goldenye" In this explosive action packed mission James with the help of a russian computer programmer battles a russian general, a fellow agent turned betrayer & a seductress assasin in Cuba for a space weapon. Terrific 007 entertainment, still the best James Bond movie, the supporting cast is terrific too & I'm excited see Daniel Craig as James Bond in "Casino Royale" the movie about James' first mission
