As a lot of professional movie reviewers have said, "Bullitt" is not an instantly easy film to understand. The plot is slightly disjointed, but repeated viewings make all the nuances fall into place.
Steve McQueen, however, is at his absolute "Cool" best! Whether verbally sparring with co-star Robert Vaughn, or chasing "Johnny Ross" across the tarmac of the San Francisco airport, McQueen (as Lieutenant Frank Bullitt) is a movie star as they are supposed to be.
I owned a 1968 Dodge Charger when the film first opened. I firmly believe the car chase in "Bullitt" is the finest ever filmed, and a wide-screen format is a must for anyone wanting to experience what movie-goers did when the film was released. This car chase allows "Bullitt" to essentially have two climaxes, and both will keep you glued to your seat.

Husband loves it. Has watched it several times since he got it for Christmas. Very good Special Features.

The 2 Disc Special Edition is better than the HD version of this movie. It has less grain in it and plays with surround sound on digital.

This is a great film for Steve McQueen fans and if, like me, you did not already have a DVD of Bullitt and have an HD-DVD player, you might as well get this disk on Amazon's two-for-one offer since it's only $10, then. However, otherwise just get the DVD version as there is nothing the HD-DVD adds. This is an old movie and short of a Ted Turner style make-over, there is nothing that can be done to make it look better than the DVD version already does. The movie, in HD-DVD, is quite grainy and not sharp...just like on DVD.
I rate it a five star for the movie and three star for the HD-DVD format and average to four starts.

One needs to consider the times from which it was made (1960's) and the type of detective films that preceded it. This is not a Raymond Chandler story. Nor is it supposed to be a modern "Hollywood carnival ride" movie, even with the great classic car chase here. Answer's are not neatly explained, if at all. If you weren't alive in the 50's and 60's you're not going to understand the context of the times and what it was like unless you dig deeper... The world moved both slower and faster back in the 1960's. In some ways the story follows like a stoned dream, how San Francisco was rediscovering itself back then. That's what continues to make this film interesting all these years later. It's classic cool.
Looks super in HD-DVD, no problem. A "must own" title in HD format.
