Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - I hate this movie, I really do
Leaving aside the fact that it represents itself as a movie version of a classic sci-fi novel, this is quite possibly one of the worst movies ever to come out of Hollywood. It mixes human wave assaults against faceless enemies with poor story line and non existent character development. If you loved the book you'll hate this move. If you hated the book you still may hate this movie unless you're watching it to reaffirm your belief that all soldiers are knuckle dragging idiots that should be sequestered from society and disposed of, preferably by a giant cg monster.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. It takes a thought provoking book and throws out everything but these things: The main character is named Johnny, the bad guys are called bugs, Johnny is in the Mobile Infantry.

I'm told that the Director was in the Dutch Marines and so I really expected better then Nazi human wave attacks in space. My guess is that either the Dutch Marines are less professional then my local boyscout troop or the Director has a very low opinion of the Military and the type of person who would willingly join.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - mmmmm
I bought a used copy and it did not come in the DVD case that they display on the Starship Troopers page. If I buy it again, I hope it comes in the cool case they show on the page.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Cheney's Favorite Movie.
I saw this film in a theater back when it came out in '97 and saw it as being a clever and thought-provoking satire/social commentary. I recently watched it again and found `Starship Troopers' to be so chillingly prescient that I cannot get it out of my mind. While it functions (well, I might add) on a superficial level as an exciting action/scifi romp, this movie leaves you with plenty to think over.

The basic premise is that after being `attacked' by a so-called an inferior civilization, all governmental functions, media, information, and public life on Earth become subordinate to the military. Of course, an early bit of dialogue suggests that those in power assumed their authority in some kind of coup prior to the alien war. Moreover, the film frames the alleged attack so that a reasonable person would rightly question who the real aggressor is. Finally, the film suggests that Earth's treatment of enemy prisoners amounts to behavior that Americans once would have labeled torture.

If we aren't currently living in a government that is deliberately patterning itself after `Starship Troopers', then we might as well be. The fact that this film came out 4 years before the false flag operation of September 2001 amazes me beyond words. I would recommend this film be mandatory viewing for every high school and undergrad student in the U.S. before too many of our younger generation forgets what life was like before the bloodless coup of 2000.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - GREAT MOVIE AND TIMELY SOCIAL COMMENT
I guess one should never take a Paul Verhooven movie as social commentary -- but why not? Verhooven is a wildly under-rated filmmaker who as a keen sense of satire and social analysis. In Starship Troopers, he uses Heinlein's take on how the military mind works one step further and establishes a world (and society) where the military mind is everything. Only the military are qualified to be citizens because they, unlike others, are the ones to make the survival of the species their personal responsibility. Great, and I'm sure that rationale is the path to a better world. But let's apply this ethos to the present time. We have service personnel all over the world, at this moment, fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, and many other places. Their mission: to defend civilization and take personal responsibility for its survival. We are reminded over and over again, by politicians and the media, that they are making the greatest sacrifice -- one that few others are willing to make. It is for that reason that they are considered the best among us. Indeed, they are the only ones among us who know what citizenship really entails. And on the flip side of that, we have these same soldiers blamed for the Abu Grab torture incidents, accidental civilian deaths, the failure of the mission in Iraq, and a host of other mishaps. In the end, our service personnel are less than the warrior heros they have been painted to be. They are less than perfect. Actually, they are more like everyone else, except they are stuck in situations that few of us in in our right minds would want to be in. So, watch Starship Troopers with an open-mind for satire. And while your at it, watch "Three Kings", "Jarhead", "M*A*S*H" and "Catch-22" and get the whole picture of what it really means to be a soldier.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Favourite Movie
Really enjoy the send up of the military mind-set and the concept of service guarantees Citizenship (if you survive). Plenty of humor and tounge-in-cheek moments. The set up is over the top! Kill the Bugs !!!

Don't waste your time watching Starship Troopers 2 as it is pathetic.
