Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Enjoyable movie, but is way off from the book.
I like this movie. You can't take it seriously though. It is extrememly corny in a lot of respects but is fun to watch. However it does not hold true to the book hardly at all. I would recommend watching the movie first, then read the book. If you do it the other way around you will probably hate the movie. The book is very good in the sense that it is a lot "darker" than the movie. It explains "Rico's" physical and mental torment during training, and in the life of a combat soldier. There is very little contact between both sexes in the book as opposed to the movie in which they all live and "shower" together. Neither the book or the movie are a waste of time. I recommend both definately.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It stands alone its not Heinlein
While I am proud to see some of his books made into movies, myself as an avid Heinlein collector finds fault with the straying from the storyline.

As a standalone picture I enjoyed it, but it was not to me Heinlein's vision in the book he wrote. The focus on family was taken aside to focus on some girl, the focus of maturity was made to be a coming of age item and love interests.

Don't get me wrong I like the film, but it was not Robert Heinlein's book.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - 2 Stars For Dina Meyer in the Shower.
You people giving this a lengthy and thoughtful review have too much time on your hands. This film? Jocks in space. Sci-Fi for dummies. Hokey special effects. Melrose Place level acting. Dougie Howser in space. Denise Richards looks great. But after watching this it occured to me that that is what she is really famous for... but she is not in the shower scene that everyone was buzzing about either. This is a silly film about earth in the future having to send the military into space to fight giant arachnids that want to snack on homo sapiens. It plays like a tv movie right from the start with a little bit of nudity and extra gore thrown in. But essentially this is a guilty pleasure that will never be in the same category as Star Wars or ET.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Cheesy Goodness It's A Bunch Of Calcium In This One
I have never seen the entire movie. I always catch this movie in the middle of it. But from what I have seen this is one of the worst movies ever. But that is what makes it great. Lame monsters and terrible over dramatic acting team up to make a B movie classic. Now if you think this is an actual "good" movie you have some issues. If you appreciate cheese flowing through your tv screen into your living and down the hall out of the window and down the street then this is for you.

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - The Movie Rips the Heart Out of the Story
Robert Heinlein's 1959 Hugo Award winning novel Starship Troopers is the inspiration for this very loose movie adaptation. Heinlein was a 1928 graduate of the Naval Academy and the author of over thirty science fiction novels. Starship Troopers encouraged the growth of the military science fiction subgenre.

Literature is a springboard for ideas, insights and intellectual growth, but science fiction rarely aspires or reaches such heights. When I first read the novel as a teenager it provided insights into how a society might be organized and in the years since it has been a springboard for new ideas and growth. I'm not saying the novel is great literature, but it is superior science fiction. It presents a plausible future society with an appropriate intellectual and philosophical framework. It is the philosophical aspect that is at the heart of the novel. This movie rips that heart out of the story.

Written during the height of the Cold War, the novel was the means by which Heinlein argued for a strong military. The story also serves as a vehicle to present his libertarian political ideas. While the story does contains more introspection, exposition, and character discussion than is common in the genre it has also been criticized as exceedingly pro-military and lacking in character depth and development. The story is pro-military, but I do not agree that it lacks character development. However, one must remember that, unlike most science fiction, Heinlein was presenting ideas with the novel, not merely a story about killing alien bugs.

If the movie stood alone I might be able to recommend it based on some fine special effects, truly unworldly aliens and great action scenes, but since I read and enjoyed the novel I could not enjoy this travesty of a movie.

Recommendation: Read the novel, Starship Troopers, skip the movie.
