Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Elvis - The Way It Is!
I was never one of the screaming, crying, groupies who crowded around a star touching and tearing their clothes etc. But I loved Elvis Presley. His voice could make my toes curl. Still does and I'm an old lady. I have probably seen all his movies, bought most of his albums and followed his career from day 1. I own several video's and DVD's of his movies and lately have been buying the "outtakes" such as this Special Edition. I think I like these better than the movies. It gives a very good picture of the "real" person. His sense of humor and the way he interacts and responds to those around him. His friendliness. I loved the way he sometimes "messed up" on the lyrics and then just went right on singing as though it was part of the plan. I recommend this DVD to anyone who wants to see the real person behind the KING'S image.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Nice extras but the '70 version has the "heart"
The Elvis documentary released in late '70 was something like several of his *features* - it coulda been alot better. Yes, there should have been more concentration on the concert as not only an event but as an experience with a beginning, middle, and end. The show builds and suddenly we're in a hotel room with a fan; then back to Elvis. Suddenly, we're overseas and Presley imitators take up the screen. And too much show business *business*, if-you-will: like, the souvenier stands are to the right.
But the original release had warmth...and "heart": an International employee and fan is interviewed prior to the performance and then is photographed at the show, rockin' in his seat. And, generally, the close-ups of fans prior to and during the show is something that future documentary makers should have learned from: live pop-rock music thrives on audience reaction and most concert tapes I've seen keep the cameras too focused on the stage.
The expanded offer basically changes the format from documentary to concert. Then, amazingly, eliminates material which (for me) made the release a (flawed but genuine) classic: "I Just Can't Help Believing" should have remained the absolute centerpiece. Perhaps it was removed, along with others, to make room for originally unused performances - found on another package! "The Lost Performances"!!
As another Amazon reviewer noted, editing out "I Just Can't..." really messes up the great bit with Elvis and Charlie Hodge when it appears Big El nervously suggests placing the lyric sheet on a bench on stage.
The new edition certainly is worthwhile for the deep fan. For example, the long take of "Little Sister"/"Get Back" during rehearsal is something to revisit more than occasionally.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Not as good as the theatrical version unfortunately
Which is a shame because the picture quality and sound quality are first rate.
Really the only unforgiveable sin of this version is the omission of 'Bridge Over Trouble Water'. Elvis' rendition in the theatrical version being my favorite song of the concert. Why its missing on this version is anyones guess, but it should be here. Also Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline' is missing on this version.
More songs that werent included in the original are on this version. So that is a plus. However I feel that the order in which the songs were played in the theatrical version flowed better.
The theatrical version gave you the feeling that you were ringside for one Elvis concert. In this version some songs have Elvis in a different costume on a different night so that ruins the feel of the film somewhat.
For completeness this DVD should have included the original theatrical version for those who prefer the original.
I can recommend this film only for the picture quality and audio quality. The original Thats the Way It Is despite its flaws is superior to this film. I urge Elvis fans to get the original first in lieu of this film. You can find it from overseas vendors where its still published in its original form.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Excelent
I am very happy with the DVD's and the excelent service provided by amazon.com , I have also purchased the soprano's from you and await the sixth season

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Elvis - That's the Way It Is - by Janet Smith (English!)
Being English, we did not get an opportunity to see Elvis live in concert - we had the films, and we had the records (before c/d's!), but of course he never came to England, and therefore, never had the chance to see him perform.
Recently, the tv have shown the video to Suspicious Minds, and I must say I was impressed. I had to send to America for the DVD (couldn't get it in England), and when it arrived I was really in awe, what a wonderful performer, and this dvd put together from a series of concerts over 3 nights, was wonderful. I can now understand why he is called the king, and deservedly so. I am so glad I took the trouble to track down this dvd.
