The Reaping, starring Hilary Swank was interesting for a variety of reasons. Of course there was nothing terribly original. The plot involved biblical plagues, a child believed to be responsible for the strange happenings being reported, strange deaths and a disbeliever. I, on the other hand, looked at it from the perspective of "How would I react following a situation that rocked my spiritual beliefs to it's very foundation"? "How would I view God or my spirituality following a tragedy that rocked me to my core"? Or "How much can a person take before they break"?
While the story revolves a Louisiana State University scientist who heads to the bayou to investigate reported biblical plagues. Water is turning to blood, frogs falling from the sky, lotus covering everything following the death of a young boy at the hands of his sister. As the story unravels, we find out that there is more to this small town that meets the eye.

The Reaping deals with a former missionary(Swank) whose family was killed in the name of God in Africa. She has lost all faith and her life is dedicated to debunking miracles around the globe. She is then called to a hidden little town in Louisiana to investigate the start of the Biblical plagues supposedly caused by a doe eyed little girl. This is not really a scary movie, with barely a single jump. It is more of a supernatural mystery more in line with The Skeleton Key. It is a fair movie with a nice twist or two at the end. It is helped by strong acting. As for the Blu ray quality, it seemed a little off. Some parts looked crisp and clear, others looked no better than regular dvd. This is an okay movie for a slow rental week.

Well, maybe not.But the fun in this film is that it takes a standard idea in horror(child with supernatural abilities) and mixes in some regulars like the town that is not what it seems, and adds a "much older" prophecy that is telegraphed to a Priest by fiery edits of his photo collection.
The Characters are developed well, and the story is layed out very carefully until the climactic end, which also leaves a sufficient amount hanging to allow for a sequel.I had been waiting to buy this item, and I have not been disappointed, good watch, very good audio 5.1 mix. Also, it emerges in the extras that this film was one of a number that were affected by Cyclone Katrina ( I had thought SKELETON KEY was a similar one, but I think it was pre-Katrina).
The DVD is unfortunately a double sided disc, which is a format that has its own problems in many DVD players ,so I hope they fix that in later releases. The small number of extra material is nice, but this might have benefited from a track commentary.

Sure, the end-of-days storyline is nothing brand new, but I found The Reaping to be a unique, well-written and suspenseful story. This movie takes an educated look at religious parables and possible scientific causes, which I find fascinating. Most of all, however, this movie tells a timely metaphor about the struggle between the pure will of God versus the misguided, fanatical will of man. The world itself struggles to embrace the concept of a higher power *in addition to* science, without destroying each other in the name of any popular, polarizing religion.
I've seen many horror and sci-fi films, and didn't find this one to be annoying or cheesy at all, as other reviews suggested. I thought all of the characters were believable and I really enjoyed the entire movie. The "Special Features" section of the DVD includes a documentary on possible scientific explanations of the biblical plagues, which was also well produced and thought-provoking.

The single star is not a review of the movie, but to agree with other reviews that object to Combo releases. I question there is a real market for Combo releases and see this as a means to charge higher prices for the most popular movies. I refuse to buy any Combo releases for the higher $$$ and urge other buyers to do as well. We need to send a message or we will see everything released in Combo adding up to 40% to the price!!! The arguments made for Combos are that (1) you can also play it on standard DVD players and (2) it "future" protects us in case the HD DVD format becomes obsolete. For (1), there may be some interest in this but for me I didn't buy an HD DVD player to watch movies on a standard DVD player. For (2) frankly, I'll take my chances because if HD DVD becomes obsolete, existing players will last for quite a while and combo players will be available. Also, I can afford to buy into Blu-Ray or any other new technology with the money I saved not buying Combos (I wouldn't take a step backward to DVD). If the studios think there is a market for Combos, fine! -> Just release a HD DVD only version also at the same time. See how many they sell of each. Frankly, I only moved up to HD DVD when I saw Amazon pricing them comparable to DVD. If you don't think there is a strategy on the part of the studios using Combos to generate more revenue just look at the upcoming releases of White Noise (HD DVD only) and White Noise 2 (Combo). What sense does that make other than to create interest with the first movie and then sock it to you on the second! Look at other series (Bourne, Harry Potter, Oceans 11-13, etc.) same pattern. If they truly want the launch of HD DVD to be successful (as I do!), Combos pricing is very counterproductive. Annoyed and frustrated.
