I bought this for my 4 year old boy and he loves it. I'm impressed about how long he'll sit and put these together. Shortly after getting this for him, we bought him 2 other small boxes of legos. Although legos are expensive, they're so much fun and really are great educational toys -- promote creativity and fine motor skills!

This is a great first big-boy (and big-girl) lego set. Our three year old loves it. I put the chassis and wheels together, and he can "decorate" the vehicles with the extra brick. I think he will play with this set for years.
But shame on the seller for charging $40. This set is available direct from Lego at http://shop.lego.com/ for only 19.99

From the product description it was not clear how small the parts are. They are infact very small. I bought it for my son who is nearly 3, but still apprehensive to give it to him. So it is in storage until he is old enough to play with it.

Not sure what more I can say about Legos. They've been around forever, are durable, colorful, and spark hours of creative, imaginative play. We started my son on Primos or Quattros or what ever they're called (the largest size legos) when he was just 1 yr old, then moved to Duplos, now he is starting to get into the smallest Lego sized blocks.
My son got this set for his 4th birthday. The box says it contains 300 pieces, and I'm going to trust them on that. We certainly had enough pieces to make all 3 vehicles on the box cover, plus a couple of road barriers, and still had enough left over pieces to fill up the dump truck and push around with the front loader.
I guess if there are any "cons" to this product, it would be that there is no storage container included in the box. The pieces are divided into several small plastic bags and once you open them, there is no way to put them back. But, if you get the "ultimate Lego building set" (which comes with 200 or so pieces in a big "tupperware" container)you can always dump these pieces in with the other set. I guess if you want to keep your lego sets separate though, you'll have to figure out an alternate storage solution.
As for the pieces included, this set comes with the regular square and rectangular sized leggos, plus multiple steering wheels, windshields, at least 14 tires, 1 construction worker, and various other sizes, also comes with a little booklet of ideas on building different kinds of construction vehicles. It does have some of the smallest size lego pieces... so watch out around really young children.

We bought this box for our son's fourth birthday. It was by far his favorite present. We haven't bothered trying to make any of the pre-designed models, although they look very cool. Instead, my son has enjoyed putting together miniature replicas of the cars he likes best. Of course, his designs are crude -- one long LEGO plank on elevated wheels he declared to be a monster truck -- but that's the beauty of this set. It is simple enough for a 4-year old to jump right in and make something from scratch, yet will grow in complexity as he matures.
Right now, there are plenty of pieces he doesn't incorporate. But others are obvious enough that he uses them appropriately (and sometimes with creative inappropriateness) on his vehicles. Grills, headlights, and spare tires are great examples.
We also have a 2-year old daughter for whom the tiny LEGO pieces serve as excellent bits of "food" for her kitchen set. You can imagine the fights that break out between the two of them...
Very highly recommended. My son hasn't made the same vehicle twice.
