I actually just saw about the first 15 or so minutes of the film, but, I have read the whole story, so, I can't
really say that I can do an honest revue of he film, but, I will go as far as saying it seemed wonderful-even just
the first few minutes that I did see. The written story itself became one of my very favorite stories that I have
ever read in my life! I'll bet the movie version is just as wonderful.

Having read the book I naturally could not wait to see the movie.
Much to my surprise I love the movie more than the book. The difference, however, is that the book was able to give more background and helped me understand the story better. But the movie captures the essence and brings a better understanding of "For you a thousand times over!"

The Kite Runner, set in Afghanistan, both before and during the war, tells the story of two boys from quite different social milieux; one is the son of the servant of the other. Despite this social gap, they are the best of friends, and one always protects the other. They take part in a kite flying race which ends in disaster. When the Taliban arrive, the master and his son leave Afghanistan for America, where they live in straitened circumstances, in an Afghan ex-pat community. I dont want to spoil the story, but later, the young man returns to his country, in an attempt to repay his old friend for his loyalty and protection. The shots of Afghanistan are breathtakingly beautiful, and the story of the intertwined lives of the two boys is believable and very moving. I cant recommend it more - I read the book by Khaled Hussein first, which usually ruins a subsequent film for me, but not in this case.

I don't know why this film didn't do better in the theaters or at the Academy Awards. It is gorgeously filmed, lyrical, and a great story to boot. Some people may have problems with some edits -- the film skipped a few key episodes from later in the book -- but for the film, I think it still worked. I used this film with my students after they read the novel, and they all loved it. The sweeping landscapes bring Afghanistan to life (even though it was filmed in China.) The boy who plays Hassan is especially memorable. The whole film was touching.
