Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Gorgeous and sad
I never expected to fall in love with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The fact it happened to be foreign (insert "I have to read it?" now) didn't help my eagerness to see it during its initial release--but I did and, man, what a ride! The fight scenes are brilliant and the poetic music only adds to its mass appeal; the acting, even in Mandarin-language, is brilliant and believable. The story is solid and the filming is amazing as well. Crouching Tiger is one of those movies that possess something magical. The ending is one of the biggest heartache-inducing finales of any dramatic film in history in my opinion. Crouching is poetic and beautiful, stellar and amazing. This is THE foreign film to own!

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - get the standard version
This review is based on the differences between the standard DVD disc and the Superbit version only. Based on that, I recommend that you save your money and get the standard version. You'll get more features, while barely losing any audio or video quality, which is the whole reason for buying a Superbit disc in the first place. I've watched this movie on my 40" LCD Sony XBR BRAVIA (720 dpi), an OPPO upscaling DVD player, and 5.1 sound system, and for this movie, I didn't see any perceivable difference in video quality from the standard version. So unless they're selling this Superbit version for 10 bucks or less (which seems to be the trend since Superbit discs may become moot now that HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs are starting to come out), I'd recommend getting the standard version of this movie, which sells for about 10 bucks at the major electronic retailers.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The definitive Asian masterpiece.
"Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" is one of those films that comes along once in a lifetime. It is a true cinematic masterpiece; in every sense of the word. Ziyi Zhang, Chow Yun Fat and Michelle Yeoh are simply awesome in this film. This is the film that started it all. Many great epic films have followed like: "House of Flying Daggers", "Hero", "Musa The Warrior", "Fearless", "Warriors of Heaven and Earth" and "The Legend of Suriyothai". From the awesome martial arts, to the love story, to the scenery, it doesn't get any better than this. Even the inspiration for this film, "A Touch of Zen", although awesome itself, can not compete with this historic film. MUST BUY!!!

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - a simple story, but a beautiful movie
Now if you were to tell me that Ziyi Zhang was not a martial artist by trade before watching this movie, I would have never believed you. But when woo ping gets to do the action, he gets what he wants.

I was very depressed to see how simple the story was. Being a huge fan of the Ku Lung novel movies, I was expecting more going on. The only thing that I got out of the usual kung fu story was a weak character that the great Cheng Pei Pei had to play.

So the action is AWESOME but I just like more of a story than a girl who desires to be the top fighter in the martial world and some mystical sword. I highly recommend a movie like Killer Clans or Deadly Breaking Sword over this. I just like films where I have to think, and I got nothing from this. It is all just presented just like it is.

And the action I again have to comment on. Most people who don't like it because people just fly around. Well just so you know. In a movie like this, they put the actors on wires to show what happens when a true athlete is using one. American movies need to learn the importance of this as I am yet to see it used properly.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Before I had seen "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" I had never seen any sort of martial arts movie and had only seen one film in a foreign lanugage with the original language spoken and subtitles. However, this film was so intreguing that I felt immediately absorbed.

This film has an excellent plot line for an action movie. There is plenty of fight, but not too much. There is a coming of age element, but it doesn't drown out the rest of the story. Lastly the matter of love is disscussed and attended two in two diffrent veins, but does not overpowere any other part or element of the story. The ending was slightly disapointing, but the middle made up for it.

Some people are bothered by the flying in the fight sceens. Yes, if you are a purist, then it is most likely going to bother you. However, the choreography of the fighting, again, is very powerful and allows the viewer to ignore the slight, fantastic moments of flying.

Overal, great movie.
